Facts

Everybody needs a little help sometimes. At some point in our lives, we all need a helping hand, an act of kindness, a friendly word and hope of a better tomorrow.  Help On Wheels is more than distributing FREE clothes and food to vulnerable children, youth, seniors and adults; it is all about connecting with people and making a difference. It’s about a hand up verses a hand out.

WHAT:

Help On Wheels has a number of programs which include:

CLOTHES ON WHEELS provides new and lightly used clothing, jackets, gloves and footwear to vulnerable children and adults for FREE!  This year there are over 112 planned events that will connect with 20,154 children and adults, 118 schools, and we will distribute over 120,000 pieces of clothing, jackets, gloves, shoes and boots.

FOOD ON WHEELS visits over 1000 individuals weekly and provides thousands of pounds of perishable and non-perishable food & more. The weekly in-home program does more than just deliver food, it delivers hope.

HARVEST BOX is a program that has been bringing fresh vegetables and fruit to people for over 15 years! The program was developed to encourage healthy eating, educate people on the benefits of consuming vegetables and fruit daily, provide value added vegetables and fruit and support local BC farms.

WHY:

British Columbia has the highest poverty rate, highest child poverty rate, highest number of “working poor” and has the largest gap between “have” and “have not” in Canada. There are many reasons and causes, and change is possible: one person at time, one family at a time, and one community at time.

WHERE:

The program is focused on the Greater Vancouver and Fraser Valley.

WHO:

Help On Wheels works in cooperation with Community-Schools Partnership programs, businesses, organizations, churches and community groups. Operations and events are run by two full time directors and an amazing team of over 180 volunteers.

WHEN:

The original program was started over 10 years ago and was based out of a school in Surrey. In 2010 a new program, Help On Wheels was by created by Marc and Sanja Poitras with a vision and focus to reach out to thousands. This program has been well received by the community and presented with several prestigious awards. Help On Wheels is a CRA Registered Charity (# 817706112RR0001).

HOW:

We receive support in the form of donations of cash, products and clothing from corporations, businesses, individuals, schools, churches and other organizations.  We also receive support from Surrey School District #36 which supplies space for our processing centre and storage areas.  We have a contineous need for cash donations which are used to purchase undergarments, footwear, and to cover our operational expenses.
